Frequently Asked Questions

The daily power you’ll get from solar depends on system size, location, and shading. As a rule of thumb:
On average, each 100 watts of solar panel capacity will generate about 30–40 amp-hours per day (at 12V) in good sun.
For example:
200W system → ~60–80Ah per day
400W system → ~120–160Ah per day
This is typically enough to cover lights, refrigeration, electronics, and other essentials without running the generator as often.
Important note: On boats, the biggest limitation isn’t just how much solar you want — it’s how much space you actually have to mount panels. Between rigging, dinghies, radar arches, and deck layouts, available surface area usually sets the upper limit on your solar capacity.
-
Shading is one of the biggest factors that can reduce the performance of solar panels on boats. Even a small amount of shade from a boom, mast, rigging, radar, or even a handrail can cut output significantly because solar cells are connected in series.
A single shaded cell can reduce the power from an entire panel.
If multiple panels are wired together, shading on one can also affect the output of the whole system unless bypass diodes or independent controllers are used.
On a boat, this means panel placement is crucial.
We design systems to minimize shading by:
Mounting panels where they’ll see the most direct sun (arches, bimini tops, and hardtops).
Using MPPT charge controllers, which help recover more energy when conditions aren’t perfect.
Where possible, wiring panels so each has its own input to reduce shading losses.
-
Most marine solar installations take one to three days, depending on the size of the system and the complexity of the mounting. A simple single-panel setup can often be completed in a day, while larger multi-panel systems with custom mounts and wiring may take a little longer.
We handle everything from mounting to wiring and system testing, so when we’re done, your solar is ready to use right away.
